The Head of Antibody Characterization is an R&D management role which will enable antibody and assay portfolio expansion by leading key stages of our antibody discovery and development workflow, applying diverse screening techniques for high throughput antibody and antibody characterization. This role will manage and lead an antibody characterization team at our Waltham, MA site, and will collaborate closely with other functions such as antibody discovery, protein sciences and assay development. We are looking for a leader with deep technical expertise in antibody and/or immunoassay development and strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
This position reports to Sr. Director Assays and North America R&D, will be located in Waltham, MA and will be based on-site and bench-facing. At Abcam, our vision is to be the most influential life sciences company for researchers worldwide.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Establish and lead a high-performing antibody characterization team, manage a team of direct reports and provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to ensure project goals are met effectively and on time.
Determine antibody purity and function using SDS-PAGE, WB, SEC, ELISA, SPR and other immunoscreening assays.
Perform and/or manage multiple high-throughput antibody screening assays such as binding kinetics, ligand blocking and epitope binning to rapidly identify lead candidates.
Design and develop assays for the identification and characterization of antibody pairs for use in sandwich immunoassay platforms, partnering close with internal and external stakeholders to determine optimal screening and selection criteria.
Manage a cell sciences team and ensure that appropriate biospecimens are always on hand for evaluation of antibody performance and specificity.
Design, execute and troubleshoot diverse assays, analyze complex data, and routinely present findings during cross-functional team meetings.
Stay current with antibody discovery biology and advancements in technologies to improve the performance and throughput of antibody screening and characterization assays.
The essential requirements of the job include:
Advanced degree in biology/biochemistry/related field or equivalent work experience with 8+ years’ experience of responsibility for developing antibodies or immunoassays, at least 5 years management experiences.
Expertise and hand on experiences in IHC, ChIP, ELISA, IF/ICC, flow cytometry, western blot, etc.
Strong leadership skills, ideally with prior experience of effectively managing reports, influencing cross-functionally, training new hires and fostering a collaborative work environment.
Extensive experience with designing and conducting in vitro protein-based assays using a variety of biochemical & enzyme kinetics assays for antibody characterization.
Experience and domain expertise with diverse assay types such as Western Blot, ELISA, SPR, HTRF, AlphaLisa, Flow Cytometry etc.
High degree of data literacy, for example with antibody screening databases, data analysis/visualization software, and statistical analysis of data..
Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:
Ability to lift, move or carry equipment up to 50lb (not routinely).
This role is partially lab-based and may involve standing for over 50% of the time.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
Capacity planning / resource allocation/ project timeline management.
General management experience including managing budgets, reporting performance, actively managing employee performance and development.
Expertise with programming and/or operating automated laboratory equipment.
The salary range OR the hourly range for this role is $120,000 - $150,000. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future.
This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
