Job Description
The VP of R&D– Single-Use Endoscopy Development (VP R&D SUE) is responsible for developing a strong technology innovation strategy and NPD pipeline for Olympus Medical’s Single-Use Endoscopy (SUE) business. In addition to the technology strategy, this individual is also accountability for the new product development execution of the Single-Use Endoscopy business portfolio of programs. The VP R&D SUE works across the global Olympus R&D groups, Product Innovation Leaders, BU leadership and Marketing teams to develop a strong NPD portfolio pipeline as well as working with the Global Project Management Organization (gPMO) and SUE Cross-functional teams to ensure new products are meeting all Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to Quality, Investment, Cost, Launch Schedules, and Business metrics (QICD-B).
The VP R&D SUE develops and oversees early-stage technology programs and works closely with internal development teams in Japan, USA, EU and Asia to drive product development projects (PDPs) to develop and commercially launch single use endoscopes for different business units. This person also develops external technology partners to explore and expedite commercialization of new technologies in the single use endoscopy field.
Reporting to the SVP and Global Head of Single Use R&D, this individual will play a critical role in helping us achieve our mission as the Endoscopy partner of choice with best-in-class solutions providing the right scope for every patient, procedure and site of care. This will be achieved through strengthening and accelerating our single use offering in the short and mid-term and shaping the next generation portfolio roadmap which will include incorporating connected solutions.
Job Duties
Partners with the designated BU commercial leaders to create a strong NPD development pipeline that meets and exceeds the overall Single Use Endoscopy (SUE) business growth goals and objectives.
Plans, prepares and conducts the appropriate insight collection and ideation activities. Identifies gaps and unmet needs of the customers and patients. Translates marketplace insights into winning strategies and tactics for the Olympus’ SUE portfolio.
Provides technical leadership to ensure design, verification and validation of each product and its components are appropriate for approval and manufacturing. Collaborate closely with all functional areas necessary to aggressively advance products from proof-of-concept through validation and product launch.
Accountable for KPI metrics in Quality, Investment, Cost, Delivery and Business (QICD-B) for all SUE programs in the NPD portfolio including Sustaining projects specific to launched SUE products.
Provides regular status updates to the SUE and BU Leadership.
Serves as a voting member of the SUE Portfolio Advisory Board (SUE-PAB) in US and Japan specific to programs in the SUE portfolio.
Coordinates all global development programs including early-stage concept development, new product development and sustaining programs specific to the Single-Use Endoscopy business.
Prepares status updates for all SUE programs including early-stage technology and product development programs as part of the Global SUE NPD monthly meeting.
Provides leadership and oversight of business development acquisitions related to both technical due diligence and integration plans specific to the SUE field.
Completes all other training and job tasks as assigned by management.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree, Masters and/or PhD of Engineering, Physics or related field. MBA a plus.
Minimum of ten (10) years of R&D Leadership experience at Director level or above.
Large Program Management Experience working with global teams.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience developing and commercially launching single-use endoscopes a plus.
Fluency in one or more of the following languages a bonus: Japanese, German.
Demonstrated communication skills both written and verbal
Computer Proficiency e.g. Office 365, MS Office Suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, SharePoint, Teams, etc.), WebEx, Internet, SAP, JDE, Concur.
Web based applications such as SharePoint a plus.
