Job Description

The Regional Head of Engineering reports directly to the Head of Global Engineering and is responsible for providing strategic and engineering leadership for the Surgical portfolio of products while also supporting global engineering activities for other parts of the portfolio. This includes managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including business leaders, R&D, quality, regulatory, and security. This role is also responsible for both long-term and day-to-day operational activities, including managing a growing staff, driving engineering operations, and continuous improvement.

Job Duties

  • Provide leadership to Surgical Integration development teams by supporting product portfolio management, technical roadmap, and business and technical relationships with various stakeholders.

  • Provide leadership to the Sustaining Engineering team, manage relationship with Olympus implementation and support teams regarding service level agreements and escalation processes.

  • Collaborate with technical leads within and outside digital unit to coordinate processes, activities, and deliverables. Define and support strategic directions and tactical implementation activities.

  • Develop strong working relationship with Olympus IT leadership and ensure appropriate reliable development infrastructure, including R&D labs, network configurations, fixtures, software, and hardware tools.

  • Collaborate on creation and management of budget exceeding $10M. Collaborate with business leadership, finance, and the global Digital team to define and ensure appropriate budget levels.

  • Work with managers to ensure appropriate project staffing to meet development and sustaining goals.

  • Represent Digital Unit R&D in internal and external forums as appropriate.

  • Hire and manage direct reports by providing performance feedback, career development opportunities, management coaching.

Job Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in related discipline, such as information management, engineering or related is preferred with equivalent experience acceptable.

  • Advanced degree is preferred.

  • 20+ years of professional experience in the fields of product development leadership, software product R&D, software project management, software engineering, system engineering, or related.

  • Software medical device experience preferred.

  • Leadership of software development organization preferred.

  • Global experience preferred.

  • Other Considerations (travel/hours availability, etc.): Occasional travel will be required.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated capabilities to provide leadership to diverse R&D community in a collaborative, coaching, mentoring, and influencing capacity.

  • Demonstrated capabilities to directly manage development staff, including performance reviews, feedback, coaching.

  • Demonstrated capabilities to work effectively in cross-functional areas such as R&D, Product Management, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs.

  • Experience working in global, matrixed organizations.

  • Proven experience in creating and managing R&D budgets, collaborating with finance and business on P&L.

  • Understanding of product lifecycle, including development, design transfer, release, and support.

  • Experience and awareness of system engineering approaches and processes.

  • Experience in application of relevant standards to software as a medical device, healthcare software and software platform.

  • Awareness of medical device and health software regulations, guidance, and standards globally, including US, Japan, EU, and UK.

  • Awareness of product development process in a regulated environment, and experience in application of software related regulations, such as IEC 62304, IEC 82304, ISO 14971, ISO 81001-5-1.
