RedHat Principal Software Engineer in Westford, Massachusetts
The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join us in Westford, MA. In this role, you will maintain the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) kernel. You’ll review and prepare feature enhancements and bug fix patches.
Primary job responsibilities
Develop and maintain the tool-set that allows quick development and testing for the several kernel build interactions required to stabilize the operating system according to Red Hat's high software standard criteria
Work with complex MM memory management (MM) related issues on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) kernel, employing bug fixes
Collaborate with Global Support Services on high profile customer urgent escalations for issues related to kernel memory management area, like memory corruptions, page allocation, random latencies, and performance degradation on particular server workloads
Provide definitive solutions to complex issues by either patching current software shipped to customers as hot fixes or providing tuning guidance
Assist with writing knowledge-based articles on complex cases to help provide guidance to customers and support engineers while they are troubleshooting similar issues
Provide guidance to Platform Engineering and Global Support Services associates on how to analyze kernel crash dumps/vmcore files
Bachelor’s degree (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in computer science, computer engineering or related and 5+ years of experience in the job offered or related role OR No degree
and 8+ years of experience in the job offered or related role
5+ years of experience with: maintaining legacy Linux kernels; Linux Kernel internals and development; Linux Kernel maintenance and debugging; system software development for UNIX-like environments; and C and Intel x86/AMD64 assembly languages (32-bit and 64-bit)
4+ years of experience with: Linux Kernel Virtual Memory Management design and implementation; debugging and analyzing using tools including the Crash tool, the GNU Debugger (GDB), and strace
3+ years of experience with: reviewing and accepting code changes submitted to open source projects or software packages in an open source community; and hardware architectures ARM, PPC, and S390
2+ years of experience with: Linux Kernel performance tuning and troubleshooting on enterprise production environments; and contributing to or participating in open source projects
1+ year(s) of experience with: continuous integration, continuous testing, the peer review process and owning and delivering deep technical kernel code; and providing definitive solutions to complex issues by either patching current software shipped to customers as hot fixes or providing tuning guidance
6+ months of experience with: customer support to handle high-profile customer escalations, and communicate technical information; and writing knowledge-based Red Hat articles on complex cases to help provide guidance to customers and support engineers while they are troubleshooting similar issues
