Abbott Staff Software Engineer in Westford, Massachusetts

Abbott Vascular provides innovative, minimally invasive and cost-effective products for treatment of vascular disease. Our extensive portfolio includes drug-eluting stents, bare metal stents, guide wires, balloon dilatation catheters, imaging catheters and software, vessel closure devices and peripheral stents.

Our location in Westford, MA, currently has an opportunity for a Staff Software Engineer with strong subject matter expertise is operating systems and device drivers along with excellent troubleshooting skills and hardware/software systems knowledge. You can be part of an engineering team that develops and supports a novel, high resolution imaging technology (OCT) which is cutting edge and a game changer for intracoronary. This unique opportunity will give you a broad view of everything that goes into the OCT product. And, you’ll have exposure to all engineering disciplines.


  • Develop, configure and maintain Microsoft Windows 10 IoT Enterprise operating system image to meet functionality and cybersecurity requirements for new product development.

  • Develop kernel mode device drivers and/or user mode device interface classes for data acquisition, frame grabber and other hardware devices as needed

  • Own and maintain operating system requirements for the device

  • Own and maintain software upgrade and operating system patch capabilities including over the air upgrade functionality for connected devices

  • Manage relationship with third party operating system vendors (Microsoft and Wind River) including troubleshooting as needed

  • Experience conducting STIG scans, vulnerability scans and assessing and documenting CVEs related to the operating system and third-party libraries used by the system

  • Support third party expert security testing and other activities required to secure and maintain regulatory clearance in geographies throughout the world.

  • Interact with internal and external team members and vendors.

  • Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.

  • May travel domestically < 5%



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Electro-mechanical, Computer Engineering or related engineering discipline. ​

  • 10+ years of relevant work experience with Windows and Linux operating systems on complex software driven electro-mechanical systems with a graphical user interface.

  • Expertise in Microsoft technology stack including .NET Framework, .NET Core, WinPE, Hyper-V, Powershell, WSIM and SysPrep.

  • Expertise in Security enhanced Linux (SEL) and YOCTO experience for embedded devices including LUKS encryption

  • Familiarity with Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technologies including X.509 certificates, AES-256 encryption, RSA public/private keys and TLS-based secure communications

  • Familiarity with on-demand cloud computing platforms (Azure/AWS) and modern container-based deployment technologies (Kubernetes and Docker)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate to all levels of the organization.

  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in a geographically diverse, matrixed organization.


  • Master’s Degree in Electrical, Electro-mechanical, Computer Engineering or related engineering discipline.

  • Medical device experience.
